Sophia Coppola for Louis Vuitton

In the great tradition of the Birkin bag, created for Jane Birkin because she couldn't find a weekend bag big enough, Sophia Coppola is designing a collection of simple, understated basics for Louis Vuitton.

Coppola's aim was to create "the perfect bag that doesn't exist". The collection apparently started when Coppola paid a visit to the custom orders department at Louis Vuitton. Coppola told WWD:

“to start with I wanted to make a bag for myself and then we talked about making a little capsule collection. My friends and I are always searching for the perfect day bag. It fits all your things but isn’t too big and isn’t too heavy. I wanted a bag that I could use every day that was coming from the heritage of Louis Vuitton’s great leather goods, not connected to the fashion side of the brand. We went through a lot of prototypes but it was fun. It was always exciting to get a new one and I would try them out and add things.”

The laid-back nature of the photo shoot for the collection is certainly one of the draw cards. The shots are representative of what Coppola stands for: simple, chic, intelligent, soft, mature, relaxed and feminine. Realistically, the concept of Coppola designing is attractive because of her and what she herself represents - simple, chic and effortless luxury. I would love to see this collaboration continue into more accessories and clothing.

The collection will launch at the house's flagship store in Tokyo and be available for sale in March. The collection will include clutches, the signature SC bag and shoes. In regard to the shoe design Coppola said she wanted “a heel you can really wear all night and it’s comfortable but still looks chic.”
